Case study: Boigu Island Seawall
Following the construction of a 1,022 metre-long seawall, the coastal community of Boigu Island is now better protected from the impacts of rising sea levels and increased severe weather risk. Alongside additional initiatives on the island, the coastal mitigation works were facilitated via a $15 million partnership between Australian Government, Queensland Government and the Torres Strait Island Regional Council.
Funding was also used to upgrade existing infrastructure in stormwater drainage, housing, schools, health care centres, transport and telecommunications sectors.
Boigu Island residents are recipients of a broader $40 million program focused on coastal protection works which addresses the needs of five islands in line with Australia’s National Climate Resilience and Adaptation Strategy.
