Case study: Feasibility Study for a Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Project
Queensland Nitrates (QNP), an Ammonium Nitrate Manufacturer in Moura, Central Queensland, and their project partners Neoen, Advisian and ARENA conducted a feasibility study using green hydrogen to produce ammonia at their existing manufacturing plant. The study investigated making green hydrogen into ammonia at a commercial scale, including the technical, social and environmental issues associated with a new clean industry.
The consortium proposes to produce 20,000 tonnes per year of ammonia from 3,600 tonnes of renewable hydrogen. The new plant would provide up to 20% of Queensland Nitrates’ current ammonia requirements, which is presently manufactured from natural gas. The renewable hydrogen would also fill an ammonia production gap that QNP currently procures from third party suppliers.
