Case study: Green Gas Renewable Methane Demonstration Plant Trial

Energy Resources Darling Downs South West

APA have partnered with Southern Green Gas with support from ARENA to construct a demonstration plant for the production of renewable methane. Hydrogen produced by electrolysis will be combined with carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in a methanation reaction. The project will be located at APA’s existing gas processing facility at the Wallumbilla Gas hub near Roma.

The ‘power to gas’ demonstration plant aims to produce approximately 340kg of hydrogen per year, converting it into 35 gigajoules of methane that can then be injected into APA’s natural gas pipelines across the East Coast Gas Grid. Renewable methane could enable the decarbonisation of Australia’s existing gas infrastructure, including gas transmission and distribution networks and export supply chains.
