Review of nutrient management, environmental assessment and regulation of pond aquaculture in Queensland.

The Department of Environment and Science invites you to provide feedback on this technical report: Review of Nutrient Release from Aquaculture Activities Report for Consultation (PDF, 3.4MB) .

If you are interested in Queensland aquaculture and the health of the Great Barrier Reef, it is important you have your say by 5 Oct 2023.

The key aim of this study was to develop a better understanding of current nutrient management practices used by the prawn and barramundi sectors of the pond aquaculture industry in Queensland. A further aim was to identify opportunities for improved nutrient management, environmental assessment and regulation for aquaculture activities within the Reef catchment, and more broadly across Queensland. This work was undertaken collaboratively by the Science Division of the Department of Environment and Science (DES) and researchers at Griffith University’s Australian Rivers Institute and involved direct engagement with the prawn and barramundi aquaculture industry, industry associations and relevant government departments. As well as obtaining feedback from the industry, the study examined release monitoring data that had previously been submitted to DES by the industry and undertook a detailed review of environmental authorities available from the public register.

To provide feedback, please provide written responses to psd.help@des.qld.gov.au

Consultation closes at 11:59pm on 5 Oct 2023.
