Have a wildlife encounter these school holidays

Issued: 30 Mar 2023

Families will be able to get up close to nature these Easter school holidays thanks to an exciting array of activities and wildlife encounters on offer at David Fleay Wildlife Park and Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre.

Steve Briant, Director, of Gateway Visitor Centres, said the school holiday program, which runs from 3 April to 14 April, offered at both centres is packed with exciting activities for kids of all ages and families.

“Children will have the opportunity to learn about the importance of conservation, explore the natural environment and get up close to some of Australia’s most iconic wildlife,” Mr Briant said.

“There are a range of outdoor and indoor activities available including animal encounters, interactive displays and the popular Junior Ranger program.

“At Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre at The Gap on Brisbane’s northside, families can enjoy Nature at Night, where they will be able to see and learn about some of Queensland’s unique nocturnal wildlife while enjoying dinner on the deck.

“Visitors will also be able to gaze at the stars through a large telescope.

“Birds of the Reservoir is an opportunity for families to get out on the water as they kayak around the Enoggera Reservoir and enjoy spotting the astounding array of bird life that can be found in the area.

“Kids will also be able to take part in a real-life animal and environmental adventure as they become Junior Rangers.

“These holidays our Junior Rangers will learn all about our threatened frog species and work alongside our Walkabout Creek rangers to build their own frog hotel to take home as they become wildlife champions.”

Mr Briant said at David Fleay Wildlife Park located at West Burleigh on the Gold Coast, families could enjoy a VIP ranger tour around the park to learn about our threatened species including koalas, bilbies, Lumholtz’s tree kangaroo, Bridled nailtail wallaby and many more.

“Each day park rangers will demonstrate the importance of protecting and conserving our wildlife through daily shows and encounters, such as the Croc wise, Reptile chat and Fleays in Flight show.

“The Fleays Junior Rangers will also work alongside park rangers to create fun enrichment objects and activities for our wildlife to help keep them healthy and happy.”
