Wyalla waste direction notice

Issued: 26 Oct 2021

The Department of Environment and Science (DES) has issued a Direction Notice to a landholder following the discovery of a large amount of waste disposed of on a property at Wyalla, west of Gympie.

During an inspection of the property, DES compliance officers estimated between 5000-8000 tonnes of waste had been disposed of on the property.

Compliance officers contacted the landholder who had only recently purchased the property and was aware that a large amount of waste had been disposed of on the property.

DES issued the landholder with a Direction Notice requiring him to remove the waste from the property and to dispose of it at a facility that can lawfully receive it.

A fine was not issued as the landholder had only recently purchased the land and did not commit the offence.

Investigations into the transportation and unlawful disposal of waste are continuing.

As Queensland’s environmental regulator, DES takes environmental compliance seriously. Members of the public can report any concerns through the department’s 24-hour Pollution Hotline on 1300 130 372 (option 2).
