Planned burn in Tewantin National Park

Issued: 1 Sep 2020

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) rangers conducted a planned burn in Tewantin National Park yesterday beside Eumundi-Noosa Road in ideal weather conditions.

In the afternoon, north-east wind gusts that were not forecast carried some embers from the planned burn area into an adjacent section of the national park..

Five QPWS units with seven QFES units responded quickly to the fire which moved slowly south-west through the national park.

Two helicopters were also deployed to control the spread and the fire, which was contained around 8.30pm last night.

Around 80 hectares of land was originally planned to be burnt as part of the operation, however approximately 230 hectares were burnt

The additional hectares were scheduled for a planned burn by QPWS at a later date.

Contingency plans are always in place for planned burn operations and fire lines in the adjacent area are well maintained.

At no stage were any properties or community members under threat.

The fire is now contained and QPWS crews will continue to monitor the site today.
