Issued: 8 Feb 2019

Please attribute to a Department of Environment and Science (DES) spokesperson:

The Department of Environment and Science (DES) has been advised by Abbot Point Coal Terminal of a release of stormwater from an authorised release point into the Caley Valley Wetland.

Abbot Point Bulk Coal advised DES of the release on 7 February 2019.

The stormwater release is currently occurring from a dam spillway as a result of recent heavy rain associated with the monsoon trough.

DES officers will be onsite at the coal terminal this morning (Friday 8 February) to assess the situation and ensure compliance with environmental conditions.

DES continues to implement a long term monitoring program in the Caley Valley Wetland to determine any adverse impacts on environmental values.
