Regional school helps new arrivals learn English

Thargomindah is a tiny remote community in far south western Queensland, with a population of under 250.

‍Led by Principal Trish Luckock, Thargomindah State School has developed an informal program to assist community members with limited English to expand their communication skills. Previously, this was only offered to members of the school community but is now being offered more broadly to the whole community.

The program was expanded when the Bulloo Shire Council appointed an Engineer from a Chinese background. His wife, Claire, who has a fine arts degree and professional experience as a nail technician, knew that moving to Australia where her communication was limited would be difficult.

Through her facilitation and leadership, Trish aimed to offer immersive opportunities for Claire to improve her spoken English, whilst helping her connect to the community as a valuable member of the schools' volunteer cohort.

Non-English speaking residents are invited to become school volunteers (after receiving a Working with Children Check) and are then included in the children’s lessons for a fully immersive English experience, assisting teachers where possible and participating in adult 'conversation' as their abilities develop.

Through this volunteer program and with Trish's guidance and support of others within the school, Claire says her confidence and English has improved, especially through her engagement with the children as an arts mentor. This unique opportunity has also provided opportunities for the children to understand other cultures, languages and backgrounds.

With the community connection and conversation ability fostered by Trish, Claire says she can now participate in the community and operate her small business offering nail services. All members of the Thargomindah community are now able to connect socially and confidently.
