Park damage and recovery after fires

Issued: 4 Dec 2018

Please attribute to a Department of Environment and Science (DES) spokesperson:

Queensland has experienced significant environmental damage following unprecedented bushfires.

The first step is to assess the damage to the Queensland park estate, which Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service will do when it is safe.

Right now, some 40 national parks are closed or partially closed.

Public safety is paramount and parks will remain closed until further notice.

Rehabilitation and restoration is a long-term process that focuses on repairing infrastructure and natural resource damages.

Where possible, it is best to allow vegetation to regenerate naturally, and in a lot of cases, vegetation can recover over time.
