Case study: Sipping Duck Coffee Roasters (Stratford) ecoBiz

Tourism Far North Queensland

Sipping Duck Coffee Roasters (Stratford) is a small business in Far North Queensland that has been selling coffee beans since 2013. The business consists of two cafés, a wholesale and retail business and a barista school. Everything on offer is made onsite, from coffee to food, spices and delicious sweets. The coffee is roasted in Cairns and ethically sourced from around the world.

Sipping Duck Coffee Roasters has been part of the ecoBiz program for two years and were recognised as Star Partners during their coaching session for their waste initiatives.

Key initiatives to reduce waste

  • SC labelled paper is used for packing small coffee orders and biotape is used to seal wholesale order boxes.
  • Compostable Biopak cups, bioplastic lids and paper bags are used for takeaway orders. A range of coffee Keep Cups are also offered for sale.
  • Coffee grinds, eggshells, and food scraps are collected for composting by a local community network.

We recommend ecoBiz because we hope it will help other business as it helped ours. Sitting down with Fiona and thinking about everything we can do to improve our consumption and waste was very interesting. It was amazing to realise how much we are doing already and what our next steps will be.
