Case study: Police Citizens Youth Club, Rockhampton

Built environment Central Queensland

The Rockhampton Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) provides not only an extensive range of sporting activities and childcare services but also a wide range of crucial youth support programs and services and is home to the local Men’s Shed. Running activities all hours of the day in the face of high energy costs, floods and aging infrastructure has strained the PCYC’s bottom line.

To manage these costs, the PCYC engaged Business Chamber Queensland ecoBiz program to help reduce their energy consumption. By installing a 27kW roof top solar system, an energy efficient industrial fan and LED lighting, the PCYC reduced their energy use and bills by 26% and overall greenhouse gas emissions by 44%.

This was part of a state-wide push to improve energy efficiency across all of the Queensland Clubs. PCYC Queensland has made significant cost and emissions savings including installing more than 10,000 solar panels and multiple battery banks (Tesla) at several clubs.

This case study is part of a series of case studies that have been developed as part of the Queensland Communities in Transition project. It was prepared by The Ecoefficiency Group as part of the Clean Growth Choices Consortium with funding from Queensland Department of Environment and Science.
