Case study: Grange Thistle Soccer Club
Between 2018-19 and 2019-20 Grange Thistle Soccer Club reduced its energy intensity by 37% and waste intensity by 45%.
Key initiatives to manage energy
- An 8kW solar array on the clubhouse roof.
- The main field and half of their second field have been upgraded with LED lighting. Lighting is controlled and monitored by an app.
- There is a timer for external floodlights and fluorescents.
- Air conditioning is rarely used in the clubhouse.
- Only cold water is available in the hand basins in the change rooms.
Key initiatives to reduce waste
- A club member recycles all waste metals and metal appliances.
- Cooking oil is recycled, and leftover food is distributed to players.
- Cans and plastic bottles are separated to be recycled through Containers for Change.
- Player uniforms are collected at the end of the season and reused.
Key initiatives to reduce water
- Six 20,000L tanks collect rainwater and supplement water used for irrigation and toilet in the change room.
- They only irrigate at night when fields receive less than 40mm of rain. A sensor turns off the irrigation system if it rains.
- Very low water pressure taps have been installed for the hand basins.
These opportunities are part of their ongoing Master Plan and will benefit the Club, it’s members and the local community now and in the future.
