Case study: Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service solar installation

Energy Health Darling Downs South West

As part of the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service renewable energy project, the annual renewable energy (solar photovoltaic) generation and savings for the Miles, Tara and Chinchilla hospitals are estimated to be:

  • 300 MWh (megawatt hours) solar generation
  • 243 tonnes CO2 emissions saved (equivalent trees planted = 11,173)
  • $40,000 energy and demand savings.

Miles Hospital Solar Project

A 100kw solar system was installed at Miles Hospital in July 2021. In the first two months, the following results were achieved:

  • 12.49 MWh solar generation
  • 4.897 tonnes CO2 emissions saved (equivalent trees planted = 146)
  • $2060 energy and demand savings
  • $606 demand savings.

Tara Hospital Solar Project

A 30kw solar system was installed at the Tara Hospital in July 2021. In the first two months, the following results were achieved:

  • 4.41 MWh solar generation
  • 1.727 tonnes CO2 emissions saved (equivalent trees planted = 51)
  • $668 energy and demand savings.

Based on these initial results, both hospitals are positioned to exceed the calculated annual solar generation and savings.

Chinchilla Hospital Solar Project

A 60kw system is expected to be installed at the Chinchilla Hospital in November 2021 and the following annual solar generation and savings are predicted:

  • 90 MWh solar generation
  • 72.5 tonnes CO2 emissions saved (equivalent trees planted = 3,333)
  • $11,000 energy and demand savings.
