Case study: Coral Sea Marina
Coral Sea Marina (formerly known as Abell Point Marina) is a vibrant marina village located a short walk from the tourism town of Airlie Beach.
As a certified Clean Marina Level III, they are focused on sustainable business operations and protecting the environment in which they live and work. Seeking continuous improvement opportunities, they booked their first ecoBiz coaching session in 2019 and became an ecoBiz Star Partner in recognition of their efforts to minimise waste sent to landfill in 2021.
Key initiatives to reduce waste
During its assessment, ecoBiz noted that Coral Sea Marina had many initiatives in place to reduce their waste and tenants’ waste:
- Signage is situated at waste collection points throughout the marina to inform guests about what can and cannot be recycled. It increases waste separation and reduces waste contamination.
- Aluminum cans, glass, rigid plastics, cardboard, and paper are recycled, with collection points available at both the northern and southern ends of the marina.
- Three water-refill stations were installed within the marina precinct to encourage guests to use their own refillable water bottles.
- The ‘Coral Sea Academy’ initiative provides a series of innovative events designed to educate guests, locals, and visitors to the Whitsundays about the environment, the Great Barrier Reef, better boating practices and sustainability.
