Case study: Business Renewables Centre Australia
The Business Renewables Centre Australia is an online, not-for-profit organisation founded by Climate-KIC Australia, WWF’s Australia Renewable Energy Buyers Forum, the Institute for Sustainable Futures (ITS) and the US-based Rocky Mountain Institute.
The Centre is funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency and state governments (including the Queensland Government). Its goal is to help simplify, streamline and accelerate the corporate purchasing of large-scale, long-term contracts – known as Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) – for the supply of electricity from renewable energy generators.
The Centre provides guides, conferences and workshops to bring renewable energy dealers and purchasers together in an online marketplace. The benefit of PPAs is two-fold—it can limit high power costs for customers and also drive future renewable ventures in Australia to meet national demand.
Net zero and sustainability targets are now a key driver for business procurement. Popular sectors noted in the Centre’s State of the Corporate PPA Market 2022 report included tech companies, retailers, banks, local councils and professional service organisations. It also noted that while early PPA market growth in Australia was driven by electricity shocks, in recent years the primary drivers for buyers have consistently been greenhouse targets, reputation and Corporate Social Responsibility goals.
