Case study: Sun Metals Hydrogen Project

Energy Manufacturing Resources North Queensland

Sun Metals Corporation will establish a renewable hydrogen plant at its zinc refinery in Townsville with funding of up to A$5 million in funding through the Queensland Government’s Hydrogen Industry Development Fund. The SunHQ project will include the construction of a renewable hydrogen production plant and installation of a hydrogen refueller suitable for heavy vehicles. The hydrogen produced will supply a trial of five hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks that will be integrated with the existing fleet operating between the refinery and the Port of Townsville.

Developing the hydrogen project will leverage their existing 143MWAC solar farm to contribute to meeting Sun Metals Corporation’s commitment to obtaining 100% of its energy from renewables by 2040, as part of the global RE100 initiative.
